The copper shist district Mansfeld-Eisleben-Sangerhausen (Saxony-Anhalt) is - among other things - famous for its gypsum specimens. Most collectors know the colorless and grey crystals from Eisleben. From Sangerhausen (Thomas MĂŒntzer shaft) brown elongated crystals are frequent. A certain variety are "WeiĂkopfgipse" (white-headed gypsum) from that locality - black crystals with colorless tops. The shape and orientation of the bright {110} face provide the easiest way to deduce that the surrounding faces are {113}. {112} would give the same diamond shape with angles of 70.5° and 109.5° but oriented the other way, acute corners towards the cube face. {114} and higher forms would cut narrower rhombs out of the {110} face. The South Face of the Aiguille du Moine, above the spot where I was bivouacing for the night. The cave where I found the crystals is high on the upper part of the South Face. The next morning I climbed up the mountain from the top of the snowfield, trending leftwards along ledges to reach a gully, which eventually led to the arete on the left. The Steward Mine was staked in 1877 and operated until 1975. A total of 79 men lost their lives in the Steward during it 98 years of operation. The main shaft was 3,900 feet deep and was one of the richest copper/silver mines in the district. It produced fine specimens of barite, bornite, and tennantite. (Author: crosstimber)
