Microcline (v. Cleavlandite). The Amazonites are well formed and fully terminated, several of which are well-developed twins. One crystal has a "slot" where it once enclosed a blade of what was likely Cleavlandite. This is an old AE Foote specimen, and was later sold by Filer’s (Redlands, CA) and the Bradleys (Los Angeles). Formerly in the Don Boydston and Joel D. Cohen collections. It is complete on all sides, unrepaired and has no damage. (Author: GneissWare)

Quartz Otome mining district, Miyamoto, Yamanashi Prefecture, Honshu, Japan 51.0 x 48.0 x 14.0 mm This excellent example of Japan-law twinned Quartz is from the Otome mining district which produced the specimens where this twinning was first described. This is a very transparent crystal measuring 51 x 48 x 14 mm, and has high glassy luster and well-developed striations. Only minor chipping. It is from the notable collections of Northland College (Ashland, Wisconsin), John Barlow and Gene la Berge. (Author: GneissWare)

Quartz Otome mining district, Miyamoto, Yamanashi Prefecture, Honshu, Japan 80.0 x 62.0 x 27.0 mm This very large Quartz is from the late 1800s to early 1900s, when the original Japanese Quartz specimens were produced, from which Japan law twinning was initially described. This is an old classic. It is damaged on both on the lower-left side, on and just past the prismatic associate crystal’s termination; and has a slight cleave on the back of the other termination (not seen from front). Still, this is a superbly aesthetic, dramatic piece from Japan with great provenance. Formerly in the Richard Hauck collection, the old Frederick Canfield label dates this to 1914, though it probably came to him in an older collection. Old Canfield labels are rare, as he bequeathed his entire mineral collection, plus a $50,000 endowment for its support and enlargement, to the Smithsonian Institution. Under conditions of the will, the Smithsonian may not disperse any of his specimens. (Author: GneissWare)

Stibnite Ichinokawa Mine, Saijo, Ehime Prefecture, Shikoku, Japan 87.0 x 14.0 x 12.0 mm This single, sharp 87 mm Stibnite crystal has well-developed parallel striations and a steep pyramidal termination. The other termination is ragged. As typical of specimens from this classic Japanese locality, there are a few minor nicks, but overall the Stibnite is in very good condition. This is from the notable collection of California collector Earl Calvert (1904-1964). (Author: GneissWare)

Stibnite Ichinokawa Mine, Saijo, Ehime Prefecture, Shikoku, Japan 99.0 x 69.0 x 44.0 mm This is a complex group of parallel to sub-parallel crystals of Stibnite to 57 mm, forming a nice 3-dimensional specimen from this famous Japanese locality. The Stibnite is of classic form and gun-metal gray in color. Collected circa 1879, it was previously in the Harvard University collection, and a Trafford-Flynn specimen. No damage. Stibnite Hunan Province, China 205.0 x 125.0 x 121.0 mm Multiple thick lustrous black crystals of Stibnite to 125 x 17 x 9 mm with a slight bluish cast make up this exceptional 3-dimensional specimen. Small secondary needles of Stibnite are perched on some of the larger Stibnite crystals. In excellent condition. Based on the age of the specimen, I suspect this is actually from Wuling Mine, Qingjiang, Wuning Co., Jiujiang Prefecture, Jiangxi Province, China and was labeled Hunan because it was sold in Changsha. Stibnite on Barite Deep Post Mine, Lynn District North of Carlin, Eureka County, Nevada, USA 70 x 57 x 45 mm Bright, silvery-grey Stibnite crystals to 11 mm, forming radiating sprays, are perched on very pale yellow Barite crystals to 15 mm across, ranging from block to tabular in habit. Only a few spots of trivial bruising can be seen with a loupe on a few Barites. This is one of only a few undamaged specimens from a zone consisting of a few small pockets. Casey acquired three specimens in early January 2005 in trade with a geologist working at the mine, and this is the only one with good proportions of both Barite and Stibnite. (Author: GneissWare)
