Grey silver sheets on reddish grey massive hornstein quartz. Very old sample (8 cm in width) from Johanngeorgenstadt, Erzgebirge, Saxony. The mining district of Johanngeorgenstadt is not as well-known as Freiberg or Schneeberg, mineral specimens from there are rare. If you like Sweet Home mine rhodochrosites you´ll smile at me if I tell you that this is a very good Saxonian rhodochrosite sample. About 6,5 cm consisting of tiny saddle-shaped rhombs. From Alte Hoffnung Gottes mine, Kleinvoigtsberg, Freiberg district, Erzgebirge, Saxony. Rhodochrosite for itself is not that rare in Freiberg, but crystals are. Kleinvoigtsberg and Rothenfurth developed the best ones. Today it´s very hard to find any, this one I got at the Freiberg show in 2009. With two old labels (dating from 1901) - "Dialogit" is an old German name for rhodochrosite (being in use until approx. 1920). (Author: Andreas Gerstenberg)

Nearly 5 cm long wires of so-called "Schlotsilber" (chimney silver) from Schlema mining district, Erzgebirge, Saxony. Not all dubious silver samples without matrix are manmade in a narrower sense. Some of them have been found when the chimneys of the smelters (f.e. at Freiberg and Schlema-Schneeberg district, Erzgebirge, Saxony) got pulled down. The silver sublimated on the inside of the chimneys. It is told that big chimney fragments fully overgrown by large silver wires have been found... But there´s nothing about ever been published and actually I never saw such "matrix chimney silver". Moreover you don´t see such loose wires that often; characteristic is their luster - the shown sample is, I think, 50 years old and there is no black tarnish on. (Author: Andreas Gerstenberg)

Pale violet fluorite octahedron from the Arnsdorf granite quarries, Königshainer Berge near Görlitz, Oberlausitz, Saxony. Although fluorites often occur in granite deposits (think of Strzegom/Poland), at this very location fluorite is a rarity. In the literature you´ll find marginal notes concerning little green or violet aggregates - not as good as the famous smoky quartzes from here. The shown crystal is part of a find some couple of years ago which developed a few single crystals and two or three matrix samples. Most of them were bought by the Bergakademie Freiberg. Pinite - a pseudo of muscovite after cordierite crystals from the original locality, the Pini Stolln, between Aue and Schneeberg, Erzgebirge, Saxony. The mineral was named after Father Pini, the man who described the "Baveno twins" (microcline) from Baveno, Italy. One day a miner found these twins in a tunnel near Schneeberg. In donation of Father Pini this tunnel was named Pini Stolln. Below the number label you can see a Baveno twin in the granite matrix. In fact one of my collection highlights!
